Product Data Standards
Ballistic figures get copied between retail sites until nobody knows the source. Here is the rule we work to instead.
Short answer Ballistic and specification figures come from the loading manufacturer’s own published data for that part number, and cartridge-level figures from the ANSI/SAAMI standards. Where a figure cannot be verified, the field is left empty rather than estimated.
Our sources, in order of precedence
-
The manufacturer’s published data
Muzzle velocity, muzzle energy, bullet weight, construction and ballistic coefficient come from the loading manufacturer’s catalogue or data sheet for that specific part number. A figure for one maker’s load is never applied to another’s because the calibre matches.
-
The SAAMI standards
Cartridge-level specifications — maximum average pressure, case dimensions, test barrel length and standard rifling twist — come from the published voluntary standards of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute.
-
The product in our hands
Packaging quantity, lot marking, primer type and case material are read off the goods themselves.
Where those disagree, the manufacturer’s figure for the specific load wins, and the page says so.
Rules the catalogue obeys
- A missing figure stays missing. If a ballistic coefficient cannot be sourced for a load, the field is empty — not filled from a similar bullet.
- Velocity is barrel-dependent, and we say which barrel. A load chronographed in a 5-inch barrel does not produce that velocity from a 3.6-inch carry pistol.
- Marketing is not specification. “Devastating terminal performance” is a claim, not a measurement, and it stays out of the spec table.
- Brand is a recorded field, not a guess from the title.
- We correct rather than delete.
What we cannot tell you
Some things are outside what a retailer can honestly know:
- What your rifle will do. Published velocities come from test barrels; your barrel length, throat, twist and the temperature all move the number.
- Whether a load will group well for you. Accuracy belongs to the rifle-and-load pairing, not to the ammunition alone.
- Reloading data. We sell components but publish no load data. Use the powder or bullet maker’s current manual and work up from the starting charge.
- What is legal where you live. We apply the shipping rules we know of; we cannot advise on your local law.
