Frequently Asked Questions

Buying, shipping, eligibility and returns — answered in one place.

Short answer Ammunition ships to most states with an adult signature; firearms transfer through a licensed dealer in your state. Minimum age is 18 for long-gun ammunition and 21 for handgun ammunition.

Buying online

Can you buy ammunition online and have it delivered?

Yes, in most of the United States. Ammunition is not subject to a federal transfer requirement, so it ships by ground carrier to your address with an adult signature required. Several states and cities restrict it.

Is buying ammunition online illegal?

No. It is lawful under federal law for an eligible adult to buy ammunition from a licensed dealer and have it delivered, subject to the age rules and to state law. What is unlawful is buying while prohibited, buying under age, buying for someone who cannot lawfully buy, or routing ammunition into a state that restricts it.

Is it better to buy ammunition online or in a shop?

Online usually wins on price and selection, particularly for bulk and for anything outside common calibres. A shop wins when you need it today. The compliance obligations are the same either way.

Do you sell to dealers and ranges?

Yes. Email support@hilltoparmoryllc.com with your licence details and what you need.

Eligibility

How old do you have to be to buy ammunition?

18 for rifle and shotgun ammunition, 21 for handgun ammunition, under federal law. Where a state sets a higher age, the higher age applies.

Do I need a licence or permit to buy ammunition?

Not under federal law. Illinois, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, California and New York each impose their own requirement, and we do not ship ammunition into those states.

Do you run a background check on ammunition orders?

Federal law does not require one for ammunition. We verify age and eligibility, apply state restrictions, and require an adult signature. Firearms are different — they go through a licensed dealer who runs a NICS check.

Shipping and delivery

Can ammunition be shipped through the mail?

Not for ordinary retail orders. Ammunition is non-mailable matter under Postal Service rules, so it goes by ground carrier.

How much is delivery?

Free on orders over $199 to the contiguous United States. Below that a flat ground rate is shown at checkout before you pay.

How long will my order take?

One to two business days to pick and despatch, then two to six business days in ground transit.

Do you ship internationally?

No. United States addresses only, and not to every state.

Returns and problems

Can you return ammunition after purchase?

Not once it has shipped. Ammunition, primers and powder are final sale because we cannot verify how they were stored after leaving us. Defective, damaged or incorrectly supplied goods are always replaced or refunded.

What if my order arrives damaged?

Note it with the driver, photograph the carton before opening, and email us within five business days with your order number and the photographs.

My order is short.

Usually a split shipment rather than a missing item — ammunition, primers and powder travel in separate cartons. Check for a second tracking number first.

Products and storage

How long can ammunition be stored before it goes bad?

There is no fixed expiry. Stored cool, dry and stable, modern ammunition fires reliably after decades. Stored hot and damp it degrades within a few years.

Where do your ballistic figures come from?

From the loading manufacturer’s own published data for that part number, and from SAAMI for cartridge-level specifications. Where a figure cannot be verified we leave it out.

Can I cancel an order after placing it?

Yes, if it has not been picked yet — email us as soon as possible and we cancel and refund in full. Once the parcel is with the carrier it has to run its course and come back as a return.

Why was my order cancelled by you?

Almost always because we cannot lawfully ship to your destination, or an age or eligibility check was not satisfied. You are refunded in full and we email you to explain. We keep no fee for an order we decline.

Do you publish reloading data?

No. We sell components, but load data should come from the powder or bullet manufacturer’s current published manual, worked up from the starting charge.
